Southwest Companion Pass

Arizona at Half the Price

For our first booked trip we got a little ahead of our selves. We actually booked our flight before the companion pass was awarded. We had come across several sources that stated that a individual could purchase a ticket on southwest before gaining the companion pass and once receiving the companion pass, add the designated companion at a later date, if and only if there are still seats available on the plane. Clearly booking only one ticket for a flight in advance comes with the risk of the currently booked trip not working out, but we thought the risk was worth the reward. To be safe, we booked both of our flights in advance on separate itineraries in case the companion pass didn’t come through in time.

Our first booked trip was for Arizona over Easter weekend.

If we would have purchased the flights with cash we would have saved $245.20.

However we ended up using miles to book the flight so the savings comes out to $491.60 ($22.40 in fees).

On 1/12/16 our companion pass was awarded. After submitting my companion’s information to southwest, I was able to retroactively add my companion to my previously booked flights.
